On 21st September 2006 we opened our first walk-in centre in Christchurch. In addition to being freely available to all without the need for appointments during weekdays 10-3, the space has been used for a variety of purposes including bringing a wide variety of new and settled migrants together for:
- coffee mornings to aid in settlement & integration,
- seminars and workshops on a variety of subjects,
- as a useful space for organised gatherings through the winter for family events.
Coffee Mornings
Informal and friendly!
Chat with friends in a comfortable environment about whatever you need. With usually between 15 and 30 people from happily settled regulars to families still swaying with jet-lag you can find someone who knows what you need.
Often a conversation with a new knowledgeable friend can answer a whole load of questions in one go, including the things you hadn't thought of yet!
We regularly receive emails from members who are planning on arriving in New Zealand soon saying they are looking forward to coming into the office to meet the team and other members. These meetings are nicely informal, low key and generally over-run the time scale. It is a real pleasure to hear members organising to catch up during the week and making friends.
The support members receive from this group in settling and integrating in New Zealand is very strong. Many migrants fail to settle properly when what should be a small problem grows into a very large one due to not having the usual support of friends and family. A perfect example of this was seen recently when a young mother broke her wrist a week before she was due to move house without assistance. A dozen people offered to help her with her move and they all turned up.
Coffee Mornings Every Thursday
10 - 11:30am we look forward to meeting you

I've attended all but 2 coffee mornings since Tammy and Mike first started running them in September and I still look forward to going every Thursday.
I came to New Zealand with my fiancé Craig (Black Tartan) and we didn't know a soul. Thanks to move2nz, and especially the coffee mornings, we now have a full circle of friends. It's a great way for members of all nationalities to come together and have a chat about their own personal experience, ask questions and advice and just get to know other people.
I've been introduced to people from America, Germany, France, China, Wales, Ireland and Holland to name but a few and it's been great talking to them about their country and culture and it's interesting to hear all about their immigration process. I would say to any members who have just arrived in Christchurch, or even members that have been here for a while, to definitely pop in for a cup of coffee and a chat and get to meet other people and make friends, it's great.

Please ... let everyone know what 'move2nz.com' represents for me: a recent arrival here in New Zealand.
Basically, it's a one-stop shop for all the help and information you need to settle successfully in Christchurch and the chance to meet other 'like-minded' individuals who are experiencing the very same emotions that are exposed when setting up home and finding work in a different country.
Despite spending many hours on several 'forums' before departing Europe, having a physical address to go to on arrival and to get that personal contact that the forums alone cannot provide has been priceless! Thanks again for your continued help and support!
Clive - arrived last week from UK
It was really nice to meet you both today in Addington. I think you have set up a wonderful support network and the weekly meeting is a great way to meet new people, help others, get help and advice yourself, as well as being a lovely social gathering.
I felt extremely welcome and everyone was very friendly.

"I really appreciated an opportunity to catch up with Tammy and Mike and also talk to some newcomers to Christchurch- chatting about how they were finding things. Took me back to when I left NZ to live in the Philippines for 10 years and my huge mix of feelings and fears and discoveries and delights. A lovely informal and welcoming space." |
